Government Official Says Ministry of Defence Examining Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, with Staff Told to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible security risks posed by Chinese cars, and staff have been advised to refrain from talking about classified information in all cars.

Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel

During a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in Chinese cars.

The minister explained that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however stressed that security is a concern in every contemporary cars.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any car, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Security Context

This announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing lasers at RAF pilots, described as a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.

The broader defence environment highlights the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of government operations, from transport use to discussions habits.
